LIFEGUARDS

Title: Bognor Regis Review
Date: (1929; [ca. 1930s])
Film-maker: Bognor Regis Film Society

The film shows lifeguards performing a drill on the beach. They wear one-piece bathing suits with a scooped front. They are emblazoned with an emblem on the front to identify their role as the ‘Daily Sketch Life Saving’ team. The lifeguards wear swimming caps with a white tie that fastens around the chin. In the 1930s, bathing costumes were increasingly cut away for men and women to reveal more of the body.

In the interwar years, lifeguards were increasingly needed to patrol the busy beaches, as more people had access to leisure time and visited the seaside, which was promoted for its health benefits. The East Sussex Record Office has documents detailing the formation of a lifeguard corps, 1935-1955 (Record No. DL/D/267/74).
