1920s CHILDREN’S WEAR

Young fashions came to the fore after World War I when children stopped being viewed as little adults. This new life-stage required its own style of dress. Rather than looking like smaller versions of their parents, they were dressed as children.

GIRLS

The two girls wear uniform dark pleated skirts and light coloured cardigans that fall to hip level. The youngest girl wears knee length socks, while the older girl wears stockings. They wear light-coloured, low brimmed hats. Both wear leather shoes.

PLAYING IN THE GARDEN

In this clip children play in a Sussex garden. The older girl wears what is most likely a short-sleeved light-coloured cotton dress with a woollen sleeveless sweater over the top. The younger girl wears a long-sleeved loose cotton dress with drawstring waist. Both girls wear leather shoes and ankle socks. The boy wears corduroy shorts, shirt and short leather boots with socks.

Everyday childrenswear is rarely found in museum collections as it was often worn out, passed down or thrown away. However, theTunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery has a pair of children’s black leather, lace up ankle boots from the 1920s, as can be seen here (Item No. 1981/146).

The young girl, Pam, wears a woollen dress an unstructured drawstring dropped waist and a Peter Pan collar with patterned bow at centre front. She wears this dress with stockings and a hat. Pam wears similar style dresses in other family films from this collection.
