For West Sussex Unwrapped 2 series finale, Frank Gray provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of cinemas in West Sussex. Illustrated using films from the archive, photos and programmes to chart the development of cinemas in East Grinstead, Chichester, Haywards Heath, Worthing, Crawley and Horsham. He introduces us to the beginnings of cinema – travelling temporary screenings in fairgounds and on piers, then to cinemas in converted buildings in the 1910s, the glorious picture palaces of the 1920s and 30s, leisure park multiplexes in the 1990s and finally in the 21st Century the reinvention of cinemas within community multi-use arts spaces.
