The film opens with a close-up of a section of newspaper. The camera pans over the text and an advert for Bovril. An old woman sews and her grandson is seen to be playing with a magnifying glass. He inspects the moving cogs of a timepiece before putting it back in his pocket. He goes on to examine a canary hopping from perch to perch in its cage, his grandmother's eye and their cat. Each time the camera shows the boy's point of view, looking through the round magnifying glass at the subjects around him.
