An amateur compilation of places and events in the southeast England. The film, which includes intertitles, captures places of interest at various locations in Kent and Southend-on-Sea in Essex, as well as scenes of beach mission and carnival at Hythe.


Opening titles: "$Z$", "Seen Southeast"


The film opens with shots of Dickens House, a road sign reads: "Bleak House", shot over roofs towards Bleak House, followed by shots of the beach with crowds of people. Waves can be seen crashing against the breakwater. In the town there are shots of gift shops and the Prince Albert Inn.

"The Tudor Cottage Margate"

A shot of a sign advertising the Tudor House, followed by shots of the house and gardens. Sign: "The Powell Cotton Museum"; shots of the garden and a large house, people wander in the gardens, close-ups of different flowers and shrubs and shots from the windows of the house looking out into the garden.

"Rochester - The Cathedral and Castle"

The section opens with views over the River Medway, including the bridge and cathedral. Close-ups of architectural detail of the cathedral, followed by shots of Rochester Castle and a sign informing of the site of the Saxon cathedral. Inside, there are shots of stained glass windows, a woman bends down to read a memorial stone in the floor. Views of the cathedral grounds, followed by shots of a timer-framed house, people are seen wandering around outside. Close-ups of the house and gardens.

"Southend - Seafront and Shopping Centre"

Brief shots of the film-makers arrival at Southend, followed by the pier and town centre, cafes and amusements and fun fair ride. Shots of the original Victoria Shopping Centre (?), with outdoor escalators and multi-story car park. Sign: "Garons-1 Banqueting Suite".

"Hampden Park"

Shots of the park and lake. Road sign: "Chiddingstone Castle"; shots of the castle and people exploring in the grounds as well as shots of the village itself, with timber framed buildings.


This section opens with shots of the Royal Military Canal and general views of the town, including Rock Cottage, the town centre, parish church. The Mayor is seen at a fete; a woman holds a collecting tin: "Hythe Charity Week"; shots of woman looking at items for sale on stalls, some people are dressed in medieval costume. Children are seen having a go at various games and some ride on donkeys. Those dressed in costume take part in some sort of competition, and are seen parading in front of the crowds. Sign: "beach Team 10.45am Games and Holiday Special 2.30...". Shots of children sitting on a beach being entertained (a Beach Mission?); a man at the front of the group leads actions and the children follow. Elsewhere in the town there are shots of a carnival parade with floats and local groups taking part. Sign: "Miss Herne Bay"; lots of people are dressed up as 'Wombles'. Title: "The End".
