A compilation of footage taken by Michael Gillings in the mid to late 1960s. Scenes at Shoreham Airport, Shoreham Harbour, Brighton Beach, where a ship has run aground, Sheffield Park Station on the Bluebell line, the 11th Brighton Coach Rally in 1965 and views from the top of Sussex Heights are included.
0:00:11:11 (6977.1) Aircraft movements at Shoreham Airport open the film. Light aircraft, including biplanes, lift off from the airfield and come in to land. Armoured vehicles drive pass along Madeira Drive, seen from an elevated position. A car is parked at the side of a country lane beneath a leafy tree, where a woman walks in the dappled shade with a armful of branches.
0:03:13:14 (6977.2) Brighton's West Pier is seen from the roof of a multistorey building, Sussex Heights, built between 1966 and 1968, behind the Seafront. The camera pans across Hove. The Palace Pier and Brighton Centre are also seen from this elevated position, looking East over Brighton. Large areas are under construction at the time of filming. The cliffs at Rottingdean are visible in the distance. The newly built tower block, is shown, looming above the residential street below.
0:05:22:04 (6977.3) 'The Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park' (title). The 473 Birch Grove Bluebell line steam engine, Wealden Rambler, passes through Sheffield Park Station. Footage shot from within a carriage, and out of a window as the train arrives at the station, follows. Crowds wait on the platform. Further footage of locomotives at Sheffield Park follows. 0:10:48:04 (6977.4) 'Brighton Coach Rally' (title). Scenes filmed at the 11th British Coach Rally, held in 1965, at Madeira Drive on Brighton Seafront. A cream Trico Marchal sports a collection of mirrors and hubcaps. Two green vintage coaches are parked on the concourse. Coaches arrive at Madeira Drive, at the entrance nearest the Palace Pier. The vehicles are parked side by side along the concourse, their numbers displayed clearly.
0:13:00:19 (6977.5) A ship has run aground at Brighton Beach. The boat leans over to one side, marooned in the shallows. A tug boat is moored nearby.
0:15:09:14 (6977.6) A large ship turns in the water at Shoreham Harbour. Several speed boats and a sailing barge, displaying sails which read 'Bells Scotch Whisky' take part in a display for a group of spectators standing on the hard.
