Summary

This film opens with highlights of the building of a yacht at Camper & Nicholsons yard in Gosport, from running the lead keel, laying the frames to adding the outer cladding and deckboards. The yacht is then launched following a christening ceremony into the Solent. The film closes with wide shots of several 12-metre yachts sailing on the Solent.

Description

'Running of the lead keel'

The film starts with shots of the interior of the Camper and Nicholsons ship yard in Gosport, Hampshire. Several men are seen working on building a ships keel and melting lead in a giant vat at one end of the warehouse. Workers scoop out the liquid lead and pour it into the moulds on a frame. Close-ups of the large vat and shiny lead liquid are seen from above looking down into the lower deck.

'Frames'

Views of cross sections of wooden frames and carpentry work being undertaken on a new vessel. Mixed close-ups of the interior of the shipyard buildings and the wooden frames being mounted to construct the hull of the vessel.

'Deck Fitting'

Views, some in close-up, of the deck boards being made and laid on the cross sections of the vessel. Various stages of the yacht's exterior being clad in boards and the hull coming together; ending with the exterior of the hull being fully clad and finished. The shots then highlight the deck-boards and cross sections over the hold being fitted. The next view is of the keel fully finished and painted and moved out to the dockside ready for launch. Several men haul the ship by rope into the Solent. The hull slowly edges forward. The next shot shows the vessel on scaffold, she is being named by a family group standing in the water. A man smashes a bottle on her side as it is lowered on to the water from the shipyard.

The next part opens with shots of a 12-metre yacht (12/K6) cruising on the water with her crew followed by views of a second 12-metre (12/K2 ?) and views of a crew member abseiling down a mast. The final scene shows a family aboard their yacht dressed in all weather clothing, as the crew make ready to sail off.
