Summary

In this Albany Cine Club drama, the Professor's plan to help a struggling snooker player does not go to plan but he clears the table anyway,

Description

"Once upon a time there was a house, quite a large house, and in it resided three gentlemen:' The Professor (also known as Joseph) is introduced, in his makeshift lab, dreaming up potions.

The other two gentlemen are seen, playing snooker, Desmond and Lionel. Lionel is described as a poorer player to Desmond, who is an aggressive player. The Professor watches from the doorway, thinking up a potion to stimulate competition in the pair. "He worked throughout the night" explains the narrator "...until he felt the potion was right for the job in hand".

The Professor tests the potion on himself, dancing and raising his fists into the air before going ahead with his plan. He fills a beer bottle with the potion and leaves it in the lab. The next morning, Maisie the cleaner enters the room, knocking over the bottle of potion while dusting the shelf. Maisie leaves to find a replacement for the broken bottle. Unknowingly, the Professor swaps the bottle of beer in the snooker room for the supposed potion. Returning to the two men playing a game of snooker "Desmond soon took control, but as luck would have it, Lionel made his way to the drinks tray...". The Professor looks on as Lionel plays like a champion, clearing the table in no time at all to clinch his first victory. The Professor celebrates in the doorway as the two players drink glasses of beer together. Music and narration throughout.
