Summary

This amateur film captures aspects of village life in Fernhurst in springtime in the late 1930s. The film-maker records part of his journey on the train from London to West Sussex and whilst in the village films a visiting circus and children playing at home in their gardens.

Description

[Kodak Safety Film logo]; the film opens with scenes of a steam train pulling out of a terminus station, passengers wave to people standing on the platform. There are views of the track from the train, the camera moves up and down with the motion of the train. At Fernhurst, a circus is visiting, tents have been set up on a green and lots of children are wandering around. Shots of a number of houses; blossom is on the trees. Brief scenes in a woodland, a dog explores off the lead. Two girls ride bicycles in the village, they are next seen playing in a garden of a long white bungalow. One of the girls stands in front of the camera and laughs. Shot of the bungalow, followed by more scenes of children playing in the garden; slowed down scenes of one of them attempting to do handstands on the lawn. Shots of a girl taking a photograph; the film ends with scenes of the same girl walking around the garden, she twirls on the grass, before standing in front of the camera talking and making small facial expressions.
