Summary

Family holiday and outing scenes from around 1959 includes footage taken at picnics, a carnival, beaches and a castle.

Description

Women laugh and smile, standing before modern residential housing. A car drives away from the estate in footage shot from the vehicle and along a motorway. While on a ferry, sailing boats and a large ship pass by. A man is pushed in to the water at an outdoor pool. A beach is seen from above in panning footage. People wave from the cliffs above. Families sit together at the base of the rock face.

Two women in headscarves walk past bathing cubicles at the outdoor pool. Men walk towards the camera with towels tied round their waist. A young woman plays on a swing in a playground before holiday chalets. Model towns and villages are seen, exhibiting houses and piazzas, fountains and grand buildings. A young man swims in the sea and smokes a cigarette while buried in the sand. Two couples walk up the beach arm in arm, disappearing one by one with a camera trick.

Carnival scenes follow; young carnival queens wave from a series of floats decorated with flowers, painted scenery, swing and trellis. A girl guide marching band passes. Fancy dress costumes worn by participants walking beside the floats include a spider and web, and Red Indian costumes.

Two women in check skirts walk through a town. A group picnics by a river. They go crabbing, holding their catch up to the camera. Four young boys stand together, all wearing wool bobble hats. The young women sunbathe and paddle on kayaks in the water. On a trip to a castle, they walk along the ramparts. Further beach scenes follow; a girl rides a horse on the beach, while others swim in the breakers and walk on the promenade.
