Summary

Home movie footage filmed by Kenneth Woolsey during the years of his marriage to Constance after the war, during visits to friends who ran a farm in West Sussex and of his son playing in the garden at their home in Shirley, near Croydon in Surrey, in the 1950s.

Description

River views open the film. Punts are moored along the water. Two women in coats and hardscarves walk along a country lane. A farmer ploughs a field, pulled by two shire horses, shooing ducks out of the way. Views over Sussex follow. Further farming scenes Byworth, West Sussex, where the couple had many friends, include footage of chickens, a calf held by the farmer, women working in a field clearing debris, ploughing and a bull grazing in a field. A woman rocks a baby in a pram, who is seen at a close distance. Ewes and lambs are seen in a field, the Sussex countryside stretching out beyond. A newly married couple stand with family members outside a church. The bride laughs as their picture is taken. Crowds of mainly young men, many in uniform, have gathered to watch a motorcycle race. Their riders lean in as they pass around corners at speed.

In colour scenes, taken in around 1953, family members play in the garden of their first house, 'Whitewalls', on the outskirts of Shirley, near Croydon, in Surrey. Cocker Spaniels veer around the lawn, chasing after a ball. The film-maker's son, Ian and a friend, aged four or five, ride on bicycles, give each other piggybacks and play fight on the lawn. Constance, the film-maker's wife, tends to the garden. A car drives towards the camera, down the lane that leads to the house. Footage shot from a moving car as it passes into the drive and along local roads follows. Guards on horseback pass along The Mall in London at an event celebrating the Queen's birthday. Spectator's line the road, watching out for the Queen, who passes in a carriage. Views of Trafalgar Square's fountains and St. Martin's in the Fields follows. Pigeons settle on a man in an overcoat, holding his arms out. Family members sit by a car, eating a picnic from plates on their laps. Ian plays with a Cocker Spaniel puppy on the lawn and crawls across the grass with a stool hooked over his back, wearing a cowboy costume.
