One of a series of newsreels featuring Herne Bay. The film includes the Carnival, a motor cycle rally, a Garden Party, the June Dairy Festival, recording of Down Your Way at the sailing club, the Beltinge gardeners, the Thanet and Herne Harriers, Beltinge fete, the regatta, St Bart’s Church Fete, The Conservative Garden Party and the Herne Bay Firefly Festival.



A float carrying Miss Herne Bay leads the Carnival with many other local town floats including Margate Silver Band, The American Band from Manston, Fremlins, Herne Bay Sailing Club, British Red Cross, Beltinge Gardeners Mutual Improvement Society and Herne Bay Dramatic Club.

‘Old Crocks’ Motor Cycle Rally

Many old motor cycles are shown by the pier entrance as part of the veterans rally organised by The Sittingbourne and District Motor Cycling Club.

Here and There

A boat is shown jammed against the Clock Tower Jetty. Stalls and sideshows at The League of Hospital Friends Annual Garden Party held at Bycannon House is shown.

June Dairy Festival

Organised by local dairy men and held in the William Street Car Park. The Chairman of the Council attended.

At the Sailing Club

The BBC Light Programme ‘Down Your Way’ presented by Franklin Englemann with producer Philip Robinson visited the town and recorded a programme. Nine activities in the town were featured but the film only shows the recording made at the Sailing Club with Commodore Aherne and Betty Watkins. Also present was the Chairman of the Council and Mrs Tugwood.

The Beltinge Gardeners

The Beltinge Gardeners Mutual Improvement Society held their annual show at The Friendly Societies Home. A marquee containing the exhibits is shown together with Mr Ford, president of the society, introducing Mrs Mahler-Thompson who opened the show. The Society is then shown on an outing to RHS Wisley. Various scenes of the gardens are featured, finishing with a traffic jam on the way home.

Thanet and Herne Harriers Meet

The hunt is shown gathering at Grove Farm, Herne, home of Major and Mrs Venner. Beltinge Memorial Hall Committee fete is shown as an example of the many fetes held in Herne Bay. A variety of stalls and side shows are shown.

The Town Regatta

Scenes of the seafront are shown, including a large crowd watching the rowing in very difficult conditions.

St Barts Church Fete

The children’s fancy dress parade features at this event.

The Conservative Garden Party

The annual garden party held at Eddington was attended by Councillor and Mrs Tugwood. Also in attendance was Mr Leslie Thomas MP, Mr Hart and the agent Mr Brown and Mr Titchener.

The Herne Bay Sailing Club Firefly Festival August 1957

The Firefly sailing dinghy festival and National Championship held at Herne Bay Sailing Club is featured. Scenes include the launching of dinghies into a rough sea. Barry Smith, from Herne Bay Sailing Club, won the single handed championship.
