Collection Bob Burns
A collection of family films by Amateur film-maker Bob Burns, from the late 1950s to mid 1970s. Films includes holidays to the Balearic Islands and several Butlin's and Warner holiday camps in the UK. Other films show a collection of weddings at North Bersted Parish Church (West Sussex) and a series of family outings and group trips by Royal Oak Pub Darts club.

This collection dating from the late 1950s to mid 1970s features the family of Bob Burns enjoying several family holidays to a series of Butlin's Holiday camps that includes Wick Ferry, Skegness, Minehead, Clacton-on-Sea and the Warners Woodside Bay camp on the Isle of Wight. Other holidays include a visit to The Tropicana, a former lido in Weston-super-Mare and a holiday to the Baleric Island of Mallorca.
Closer to home, Burns captured outings by the Darts club from a local pub, the Royal Oak. The group regularly took a Southdown coach to Maidenhead, to take trips on the river towards Windsor, Reading and later the Isle of Wight.
The films also show highlights of Bognor Carnival, a Pram race for Rag Week, a series of weddings at North Bersted Parish Church, and family gatherings featuring the Burns' children, at a South Bersted Cricket Match, playing in a domestic garden and with friends and family at Christmas time.

[Darts Outing to the Isle of Wight]
A film showing highlights of a Darts club outing to the Isle of Wight via Southdown Coach and Ferry. The group wait to board the coach outside the Royal Oak Pub, North Bersted. The film cuts to the group on a rest stop drinking pints of bitter and eating sandwiches in a field, before continuing on their journey. Views of the port follow, as the men board a ferry on foot and the film-maker captures views of boats and boat planes on the opposite bank.
[Building Works; Wedding]
A two part film. The first film shows a building construction project in progress, with workers using heavy machinery and manual tools to lay the foundations. A man in a grey suit accompanied by a woman, inspects one of the trenches, as the workers continue around them. The second film shows a group of adults and children making their way to a wedding, dressed in formal clothing; followed by scenes of the wedding party arriving at North Bersted church.
[Holiday Isle of Wight; Darts Outing]
This film shows scenes from a Royal Oak Darts club outing to the Isle of Wight, that includes shots of several boats, ships and water transport at Ryde. The film-maker captures views as a vessel leaves Ryde pier on a boat trip. The final sequence shows scenes of the club members walking around a busy high street, sitting in a garden drinking beer and playing a game of cards on the grass.
[Holiday Isle of Wight: Country Walk]
This film shows scenes from a family outing to the Isle of Wight, that includes: a large group on a countryside walk; watching the boats and a Hovercraft leave a slipway; and waving off a family group aboard the ferry (Carisbrooke Castle). The second part shows the Sandown Carnival, with a town crier riding a motor scooter, beauty queens, and children in fancy dress costume. Final scenes show a car ferry docking at a slipway.
[Holiday Isle of Wight; Christmas]
A family holiday to the Isle of Wight [not included in online clip] with several children playing on the beach, swimming in the water and water skiing. Shots include several ferries and boats passing the coastline and a brief view of The Needles. [Included in online clip] The second part shows the Burns family garden near Bersted (?), that includes a woman hanging out the washing [dark], and a snowy scene with the family building a snowman.
This short amateur film features a wedding at North Bersted Church during the summer of 1961. The bride and groom and wedding guests gather outside the church before and after the ceremony.
[Second Butlin's Holiday at Skegness]
This film shows a Burns family holiday to the Butlin's camp at Skegness. The film opens with a series of portrait shots of two women in white Butlin's monogrammed uniforms, posing for the camera, followed by a series of shots of a young child in a pram outside a chalet; a large group of guests dancing in a hall (includes a female Redcoat host); a view of the empty pool; the holiday camp sign; and closing with shots of a diving and boating competition on the pool.
[Hotham Park Country Fair]
Scenes from the annual Hotham Park Country Fair in Bognor Regis during 1962. Morris dancers perform a number of dances, watched by numerous spectators. In a playground, a young boy rides a tricycle and two children feed a Llama.
A compilation showing a family holiday to a Butlin's Holiday camp (?), that includes views of a family group standing outside a chalet, a family trip to the coast to watch boats on a rough sea and walking along the cliff side. Several family members pick heather from the side of the track road.

This short film shows a group of young children performing scenes from a play and/or dance in the school playground. A boy holds up a sign that reads: "Wanted Enterprising Girl for Office".
[Butlin's Holiday in Clacton]
This film shows a Burns family holiday to the Butlin's Holiday club in Clacton, playing in a playground, on a miniature railway and on several fairground style rides. The children race model boats on a small pond, before making a visit to Clacton Beach to build sand castles. The film closes with shots of a large crowd gathered around the main swimming pool at the Butlin's Holiday club, to watch a swimming competition.
[Butlin's Holiday Camp Minehead; Dunster Castle]
This film shows a Burns family holiday to the Butlin's Holiday club in Minehead, that includes a visit to Dunster Castle in Somerset. The children play on the amusement rides that includes a mono-rail car ride, motor boats, a two tier aeroplane and motorcycle merry-go-round and Wurlitzer style ride. Wider shots show a wooden roller coaster and a swing ride. There are exterior views of Dunster Castle and further shots of Butlin's. Additional footage on TID: 6412.
This film shows scenes from a wedding gathering, in an urban street. Friends and family wait for the bride and groom to arrive in their cars, and guests greet them outside the churchyard. The bridesmaids pose for photographs in their pink gowns, followed by the bride in a traditional white dress, entering the churchyard with an older man (possibly her father ?).
[Friend’s Family Wedding]
This brief film shows the bride and groom exiting a church following their wedding ceremony. A large group of friends and family gather outside the church to congratulate the newlyweds, where a girl gives a lucky horse shoe to the bride, before posing for photographs. The bride and groom pose with other friends and family outside the church, before leaving in an open top vintage car [continued on TID:6419 and Reception on TID:6417].
[Bognor Regis Carnival; Lynmouth]
An amateur film from the early 1960s featuring a parade which is part of the Bognor Regis Carnival. The end of the film includes scenes from Lynmouth, Devon.
