Collection Bob Burns
A collection of family films by Amateur film-maker Bob Burns, from the late 1950s to mid 1970s. Films includes holidays to the Balearic Islands and several Butlin's and Warner holiday camps in the UK. Other films show a collection of weddings at North Bersted Parish Church (West Sussex) and a series of family outings and group trips by Royal Oak Pub Darts club.

This collection dating from the late 1950s to mid 1970s features the family of Bob Burns enjoying several family holidays to a series of Butlin's Holiday camps that includes Wick Ferry, Skegness, Minehead, Clacton-on-Sea and the Warners Woodside Bay camp on the Isle of Wight. Other holidays include a visit to The Tropicana, a former lido in Weston-super-Mare and a holiday to the Baleric Island of Mallorca.
Closer to home, Burns captured outings by the Darts club from a local pub, the Royal Oak. The group regularly took a Southdown coach to Maidenhead, to take trips on the river towards Windsor, Reading and later the Isle of Wight.
The films also show highlights of Bognor Carnival, a Pram race for Rag Week, a series of weddings at North Bersted Parish Church, and family gatherings featuring the Burns' children, at a South Bersted Cricket Match, playing in a domestic garden and with friends and family at Christmas time.

This two-part film shows the family eating a meal with the South Bersted Cricket team on a playing field, followed by a family holiday to the Pontins resort of Wick Ferry.
[High Diving Display]
Scenes filmed at The Tropicana (Weston-super-Mare Lido) in the late 1950s by Bob Burns while on a family holiday to Somerset (also on 6380). Men perform spectacular dives into the pool from George Pollard's 1937 diving boards, arching over the poolside.

[Family Holiday to Somerset]
A family holiday film to Somerset, that includes visits to many landmarks and places of interest that includes the City of Wells, The Tropicana Lido in Weston-Super-Mare (also on 6388), the Clifton Suspension bridge in Clifton, Bristol Zoo and Gardens, boating by the pier at Clevedon and exploring the old market town of Dunster.
[Marg’s Wedding; Garden Scenes]
This film shows two scenes, the first is a late 1950s wedding, with the wedding party arriving and standing on the steps outside a church. The second part shows a family gathering in a domestic garden. The children play with their toys, ride bicycles and paddle in a inflatable pool watched by an adult.
[Men’s Darts Outing]
Various scenes show a group of men on an Pub Darts group outing being waved off by several women standing next to the Southdown bus on a street. One of the older men is dressed in Home Guard uniform (fancy dress?). Scenes also show a group horse riding, and several men playing a game in a field (?) behaving mischievously. [not included in online clip] The film cuts to another group of men (out of focus) outside The Red Lion Pub and the group having a meal in a field (scratched).
[Darts Outing: Evening Entertainment]
This film shows highlights of a group entertainment evening with a Jazz band, dancing and buffet meal in a hall. The shots are very dark and shaky.
[Holiday in Somerset [?]]
This short film opens with two young children (a boy and a girl) playing on a lawn in a garden, followed by high angle views of a Horse race course (?), before returning to the two children playing in a garden.
[The Turks Head Pub; Outings]
This film shows a series of outings by the Burns family, that includes: a visit to The Turks Head Pub; playing a game of cricket with a large group of children and adults in a field; the children getting ice lollies from an "Eldorado" van and flying box kites in a field.
This film shows the Burns family boating on a river, followed by a series of sporting events that includes a group of girls playing a game of Netball in an enclosed court (?) and two woman trampolining in front of a gathered crowd (?). The film closes with the children riding a merry-go-round and miniature train ride (at a Butlin's Resort), inter cut with wider shots of the rest of the fairground.
[Back Garden Games]
This film shows a family group playing in a domestic garden, with a toddler digging at the soil with a trowel, playing with a ball and two older children in a grey school uniform playing a dancing game together and with a trike. The family also go for a walk in the countryside, visit a playground, attend a South Bersted Cricket match and [not included in online clip] a christening (very dark).
This film shows a compilation of rural views and wildlife, with ducks and geese and views of a church tower overlooking a large garden(?). The film closes with a series of [shaky] panoramic shots of the rural countryside. [Shots are very shaky and scratched throughout].
[First Butlin's Holiday at Skegness]
This film shows a Burns family holiday to the Butlin's camp at Skegness. Mother and her two children walk amongst flower beds, one girl being pushed in pram the other girl walking alongside, followed by scenes of the land train approaching and passing the camera. The family get ice lollies on the beach, take riding lessons at the "Butlin's Riding School" and watch several resort events that includes a beauty pageant (?) and a police motorcycle stunt team display.
Burns Christmas family scenes including: a young girl sitting at at table writing a Christmas card, licking and sticking a stamp onto the envelope; a woman raising a glass of sherry to the camera: two children playing in a festively decorated living room; a girl opening a present; and a boy playing with a train set. The family are seen sitting down for their Christmas meal. The children pull crackers aided by their mother. The family move into the living room to sing songs whilst another plays a piano (dark shots).
