Description
Shippam Ltd, a meat and fish paste company based in Chichester for over two hundred years, commissioned advertisements for the company and its products between the early 1930s and 1960s. Many of the promotional films emphasise the nature of the firm as a traditional, family-owned business, where long serving, skilled staff are highly valued. The firm is often portrayed as part of the heritage of the local area, however the films also attempt to convey the company as an efficient organisation, with modern machinery and working practices.
Shippam Ltd produced several animated advertisements made for showing in cinemas such as Shippam's Guide to Opera (1955) where animated chickens, pilchards and tomatoes sing and dance to popular opera arias.
Screen Archive South East also holds amateur films by Charles Ernest Shippam documenting his passion for motorcycle and motorcar competitions in and around the Chichester area, as well as on a tour. The collection also features several international holidays to Norway and Japan, and a visit to Ooigem, Belgium. See CID: 866
In support of the film collections, West Sussex Record Office holds collections of photographs and documentation relating to the Shippam's firm, and has business records and publicity materials from the Company.
