Screen Archive South East, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, led a community history project on the subject of the Medway region of West Kent in the twentieth century. The project used archive film to discover the many stories and histories of the Medway and West Kent; gathering recorded memories, historical information, photographs and other related documents.

Community events took place in 2010/11 in Chatham, Gillingham, Maidstone, Rochester and Tonbridge, where project staff and volunteers worked with participants to gather information and capture audio and video oral history recordings.
All of the rich material gathered was combined to create a multi-layered impression of 20th century life along the River Medway. A website and DVD were created using clips from the project to form a valuable historical resource for the region and preserve the project’s findings. A key feature of the DVD was to combine archival film footage from the SASE collection with extracts from many of the gathered oral history recordings. In doing so, the DVD provided a new and fascinating perspective on the history of everyday life in the Medway.
