Description
This collection dating from the mid to late 1930s features the family of Francis Williams in and around their Saltdean home. Williams had a keen interest in motorcar and motorcycle racing alongside running his photography businesses in Rottingdean and Saltdean. The films show family activities in Rottingdean, Saltdean and Peacehaven as well as events such as King George V's Silver Jubilee in Brighton, King George VI’s Coronation events on the South Coast and life on the home front during the Second World War.

Made by amateur film-maker F. J. Williams, this film provides a record of local celebrations for King George V's Silver Jubilee in Brighton, Peacehaven and Rottingdean on May 6, 1935. The film contains footage of street decorations hung in Brighton, crowds celebrating with fancy dress and dance displays in Peacehaven. At Rottingdean a large wooden beacon is built to mark the occasion, a practice that was repeated across the British Empire on this date.

The second section shows some of the ships that took part in the Coronation Naval Fleet Review at Portsmouth. These include the German battleship 'Graf Spee' and the Royal Yacht 'HMY Victoria and Albert III'.
