This collection of amateur family films by Norman Harold Steed, MBE JP (1908 - 1997), provides a portrait of family and working life on their farm, 'Spratling Court', in Manston in Kent and on several Kent farm estates belonging to the wider family, between 1945 and 1969. The collection begins with VE day celebrations and goes on to document the children growing up, life on the farm, weddings, christenings and family holidays.

This film features wide views of fields across the Kent countryside, bordering a road and bridge. Views of a house in the distance and the film-maker's Jeep parked in the field.
[School Statue of St Bede; Seaside]
This short film shows a boy wearing his school uniform, holding a trophy or statue of Saint Bede, followed by scenes of the family on a beach and playing in pools they have made in the sand.
This short black and white film opens with a young girl carrying a cat through a chicken run. Other children attempt to play with a flock of chickens on the farm. The children use stones and their fingers to write in the dirt on the roof of a chicken coup.
This film shows four teenagers playing in the garden trying unsuccessfully to do a gymnastic roly-poly together. This is followed by poor attempts at doing backwards somersaults. The activities are filmed from an upstairs window.
This film includes a couple getting out of a car and dancing [overexposed][not included in online clip]. This is followed by scenes of a Christening celebration and gathering in a garden.
[Dogs and Chicken on the Farm]
This colour film shows a compilation of scenes featuring the family, their pets and animals at Grove Farm, Manston.
This extended film shows the Steed family on safari in Kenya and visiting the lakes of Uganda; capturing views of rural life, farming and the natural environment. The group also stop to admire the equatorial ring at the Ugandan Equator marker, and tour a Ugandan quarry or mine.
[Gymnastics; Building Swimming Pool]

This colour film opens with four teenagers doing gymnastics in the garden, one takes a picture with a compact camera. The next scene shows the teenagers digging a hole for the swimming pool, followed by views of tree surgeons cutting down trees in the garden. The shots return to digging the pool later in the year and laying the plastic sheeting. The family then go for a swim in the completed pool.
This very short colour film shows a single scene of two young girls playing in a water fountain, dressed in 1950s style matching bathing costumes in blue and yellow.
This colour film opens with very damaged film of a port or jetty next to a Seaspeed SR-N6(?) or SR-N4 (?) hovercraft, where a large group of people have gathered. Three men stand at the edge of a pier (Mayor plus two others?) The men climb aboard with several family members. The next brief scene opens on a farm, where a woman stands to sand an oak barrel. The film ends mid shot.

This colour film shows a family playing games in a swimming pool. A woman hurts her foot and is helped out by a younger man. Mrs Steed swims in the pool. The next sequence shows several men in the garden, one holding a baby. The pool is also shown empty. The group are filmed throughout from an upstairs window.
This film features domestic scenes of a child's christening party and a family at home and in the garden, playing with their pets. The film contains several spliced gaps/spaces where the film has been loosely edited together by the film-maker.
