Ragtime (1964)

Advanced Search

The Search options allow you to narrow your search by selecting the subjects, dates, names, and places that are relevant to your enquiry. You may search using multiple categories at once, this will restrict your search further, producing fewer (and hopefully more relevant) search results.

Searching for an exact phrase

If you are looking for something specific you can be more precise with your search by using quotation marks. For example a search for the terms: Sports Day will return any item that includes both those words, anywhere in the record, even if they appear separately. However, enclosing them in quotation marks “Sports Day”, will return only items that include this exact phrase, where both words are used together.

Clips

You can restrict your search results to only show items that have a clip available to view online.

Dates

Using the dates to restrict your search will not be exact and may produce results that extend beyond the dates you selected. This is because many of the films in the collection were made over a range of years, or the exact year of production may not be known and it may have been estimated.

Browse by Region

Click on the simple regional map to browse the archive by county or unitary authority, or use the ‘Places’ search option to restrict your search to specific counties and combine them with other search terms.

Browse themes

Many of the films and other items in the archive have been grouped into broad subject headings. These groups represent strong themes running through the collections and provide a useful starting point for browsing the films and discovering the kinds of items held here.

Browse collections

Very few films in the archive have come to us as a single title. More commonly a number of films exist as part of a larger collection of films, sometimes with accompanying paperwork and equipment. Collections of films held by the archive have been created over the years by individuals or organisations and ultimately deposited with us for preservation. Collections include: home movies made by individual families in the South East; fiction films made by amateur cine groups; promotional films by companies and organisations; instructional films by schools, councils and community services; and many others. Browse over 85 of these named collections online or search them by selecting the ‘collections’ option at the top of the search option side bar.
