Screen Archive South East was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to lead Movies and Memories West Sussex – an exciting year-long community history project in the seaside towns of the West Sussex coast in 2012/13.
The Movies and Memories project, staged a series of events and activities which took place over twelve months, using SASE’s collection of archive film to stimulate memories, stories, reminiscences and oral histories. The project’s activities focused on the older generation who have a strong connection with the region’s past and whose memories are at risk of disappearing if not shared and recorded now.
Throughout the project volunteers and elderly groups in the communities of Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis, had a chance to become involved in activities, including:
interactive film screenings and reminiscence sessions
local history workshops and archive open days
oral history training days for volunteers
oral history recordings with community members

Project Facts & Figures:
Over 40 events, workshops, interactive screenings, reminiscence and training sessions were successfully delivered over the project’s 12 months during 2012/13; held at elderly day care centres across the region, and with local history groups, community groups and members of the public.
A total of 1252 people attended the various events, and 42 volunteers were recruited during the project and attended training sessions or other project events. Roles included conducting oral history interviews; video recording at reminiscence sessions; assisting with video editing; transcribing and summarising oral history recordings; stewarding at events and general admin tasks.
60 new oral history recordings were made with elderly residents of Worthing, Shoreham, Littlehampton and Bognor Regis
A two-disc DVD set was produced bringing together locally-made archive films including home movies, newsreels and cine society films of everyday life from the 1930s to the 1960s; and combining them with the newly captured oral histories and filmed events from across the project. The DVD was distributed free across the region and can be viewed through most West Sussex libraries and archives. Extracts from the DVD can also be viewed online on this site.
