Description

This colour travelog style documentary film shows highlights of Gilbert Tomes' three week trip to Moscow with 20th Century Electronics Ltd for the British Science Industry exhibition and conference. The tour includes several public monuments including the Tsar Bell, buildings on Theatre Square, a campus of Moscow State University and the buildings within the complex of the Moscow Kremlin. A visit is also made to the exhibition of the US U2 spy plane that was shot down in 1959 over Soviet air space. The narration discusses the impact of Communism as viewed by the film-maker throughout the film, comparing it to his life in 'the West'.

Views of street traders selling their wares sharply cuts to interior and exterior shots of a visit to Red Square and the largest state department store 'GUM', with narration on the cost of items, the types available and a comparison on the west versus the beliefs of soviet communism.

The second part of the film shows highlights of of the Black Sea resort of Sochi, with monuments, sanatoria with rural coastal landscapes connected to Soviet trade union associations of the period. Wide shots of various groups sunbathing and swimming in the Black Sea, accompanied by narrative and views of the 'Hotel Intourist' buildings, gardens and flowers. The film closes with a summary of Sochi and Moscow with shots of St Peter's Square and the Soviet army on parade.
