Summary

This colour travelog style film shows highlights of the Tomes' visit to Athens. The family also stop to buy souvenirs at the local street markets and meet people from local communities and rural villages. The film has a voice over narrative and music soundtrack throughout.

Description

The film opens with a group of shepherds and beekeepers in the countryside near the Acropolis followed by mixed shots of activities such as milking sheep, marble quarrying and beekeeping on the mountains, with close-ups of several people from the community.

The next part of the film includes highlights of the built architecture of the Acropolis, Parthenon, Erechtheion and Odeon of Heredoes Atticus with narration on the history of the sites. Conservation and reconstruction work is also viewed taking place on the ruins of the Parthenon by stonemasons using hand tools. The next location shows shots of the reconstructed stadium built for the first modern Olympic games, whilst several athletes practice their sports on the track and field. Mary Tomes is shown making a painting of the Temple of Olympian Zeus using acrylics, whilst the narration details its history and construction. Views over Athens and street vendors are shown, selling their food, natural sponges, textiles, pottery and traditional dolls.

The Royal Bodyguards dressed in traditional costume parade outside a building (?) and pose for the camera. The film-maker then makes a visit to the ruins at Delphi and the Corinth canal, accompanied by shots of poppies and other flowers in the nearby fields. Family members stop to buy souvenirs in a local street market, sample street food, and to meet people from the local communities and rural villages. The final stop of their trip is the town of Epidaurus, where they visit the amphitheatre which is followed by a narrative summary of the trip and further historical information on the Acropolis.
