Summary

This intertitled film shows the family at home celebrating Christmas. The family spend time promenading in the garden and playing games with the children. The children are also seen playing with their toys in the garden.

Description

"The family at play 1937. Christmas 1937"

It depicts a family siting in a living room celebrating Christmas, smoking and playing small musical instruments. The boys eat nuts. Most of the family wear small party hats, one man wears his on his chin in place of a beard.

"No speed limits here"

The children play in the garden riding on a pedal toy car, tricycle, scooter and bicycle, crashing about on the path and around the flower beds.

"Children grow & so we sew"

This film shows the ladies of the family sitting at a table using an ornate mechanical sewing machine, whilst another is hand-sewing garments. A girl (Elizabeth ?) enthusiastically turns the handle on the machine whilst smiling happily. Fabric swatches are spread out on the table. The children continue to have fun playing in the garden.

"Toy's Joys"

This film shows a small wooden cart on wheels, slowly being pulled past the camera Onboard are a selection of children’s toys including 'Porky the Pig' (?), a penguin, kangaroo (?) and small fairy-like doll with a head dress.

"A family gathering"

This film shows the family in the garden playing games with the children. One pair (adult and child) performs standing somersaults.

"There's a leap in the old frog yet"

In this film the family including the older members, play leapfrog - jumping over another persons back whilst they are bent forward. Other family members play on the garden swings and promenade around the garden. The older children return to play with their pedal car, bicycle and scoter.
