Summary

Filmed between the 1930s and 1960s, these compiled scenes document a children's parade in a football stadium, the opening of the M2 motorway, a military inspection, and HRH The Queen attending a memorial event.

Description

In scenes filmed in the mid 1930s, a parade in a football stadium is underway. In black and white footage, groups of children in hats and coats are lead by highlanders. Speeches follow, made from a platform decorated with bunting. A woman reads from a card into the microphone at the front of the platform. People are seated behind. A baby is presented to the speaker. She holds the baby, kissing it on the cheek.

In colour footage, the Duke of Kent [?] is seen greeting the Mayor of Kent and councillors before the opening of the M2 motorway between Medway Bridge and Stockbury [?]. Two further openings were performed in 1965, extending the motorway to reach Faversham. The Duke of Kent shakes hands with the mayor, and councillors who wear black suits and mayoral chains, at a scaffolded stand. Invited guests are seen, wearing hats and formal attire. Photographers and men with cine cameras are seen. The Duke of Kent makes a speech, pulling a lever downwards to open the motorway. A reverend blesses the motorway before the honoured guests and their wives leave the stand to drive in a parade of cars along the newly built road. The Duke is seen greeting cadets.

The Duchess of Kent [?] inspects guards and witnesses Trooping the Colour during a military parade and inspection. The Duchess, in a pink coat walks to a platform. Priests process to the Duchess. One guard passes her a flag. The guards continue to march with a marching band.

In further colour footage of HM The Queen, Elizabeth II during a memorial event, paramilitary troops line the streets, behind whom crowds have gathered. Onlookers wave Union flags. Priests exit Canterbury Cathedral [?], followed by choir boys in mortarboards, and adult choir members. Bishops and the Archbishop of Canterbury leave the church with the Queen and Prince Philip. The Queen wears a blue hat and coat, holding flowers. The Archbishop walks with the Royal couple past the gathered crowd.

In final black and white footage, construction work on the front of Canterbury Cathedral is in progress. Men work from scaffolded platforms, built up the facade of the cathedral.
