A soldier retrieves his mother from the poor house when he returns from the Boer War in this positive depiction of postwar experience by James Williamson.
A soldier in uniform knocks on the door of a house. A maid opens the door before he hands her a letter [?]. He waits at the steps outside until an old woman comes out to greet him. She goes back inside and he paces the street, waiting for her to return in her coat. They leave together, waved off by a group of elderly residents on the steps. Newly reunited, the old woman is seen sewing outside her home while her son brings her tea.
