Summary

This black and white film provides highlights of livestock and farm life on the Arrowsmith family farm in Berkshire. Mixed shots follow the construction of hayricks; farm workers building thatch topped straw stacks; Suffolk Punch horses working a field; and farmers dipping sheep in a dipping bath.

Description

This film opens with a man leading a Suffolk Punch horse around a yard. A horse tethered to a cart pulls hay up to several men preparing straw stacks. The crop is passed along a conveyer up to the men standing at the top.

The next section provides a brief family scene in a garden with a group playing with several dogs.

The film returns to highlights of the family working a Suffolk Punch horse in a field. The horse is harnessed to a makeshift heavy wooden sleeper style plough and being walked around the field, as two women watch from the edge. A herd of cows walk through the farm with a young male farm hand, carrying a milkmaid's yoke with two buckets. The cows follow the boy into a barn.

At a pig auction, a female Saddleback pig is being sold in a ring. Buyers watch the auction from outside the ring. Mixed shots follow of livestock roaming in fields with close-ups of the calves being gathered together to be put into a trailer. The family try to wrangle a Saddleback pig into a trailer, chasing it around a field.

In the next scene several men are working sheep. The sheep are being dipped by placing them in a pool of sheep dip. Followed by mixed views of a flock of sheep being worked by men. Suffolk Punch horses and their foals wander about in a field. Back at the farm a horse and her foal are being led up a farm track by farm hands into a trailer (?). On a track road several women ride, their horses wearing a full bridle, through the open countryside.

The final section returns to the group of Suffolk Punch horses being led around in a field with straw stacks.
