Summary

A selection of scenes of Susan, Mr. and Mrs. Rudd's first born child, as a young girl playing in the garden with her parents, the staff and family pets. Autumn scenes of Susan and Christopher, her younger brother, close the film.

Description

Susan, Mr. and Mrs. Rudd's first child, is seen in the family garden. Family members and staff in maids uniforms join her. In another domestic garden, she plays with a pram, a woman holds her up to a fountain and another leads her on a small pony. She takes her turn in leading the pony across the lawn. She plays chase with a young woman. The family terrier is seen, before the little girl chases the dog across the lawn. She is next seen wearing a bathing costume and bonnet and carrying a leather handbag in the garden. A fancy dress event follows, in which participants dressed in Tudor costume gather outside a manor house. Beach scenes follow. The little girl trails the dog and the family sit in front of beach huts with teacups. She dips her toes in a garden pond with her mother. She is seen with Mr. Rudd, lying on the lawn and playing with two dogs. She play fights with her father and refuses to have her shoes put on. The pair play with the family terrier and two other dogs in a garden. The young girl is seen with another child, feeding horses and playing with a ball in a garden. She sits on the window sill and hugs her teddy bear. She opens a book but begins to cry. She runs to the camera, handing her father a ball. She stands by a pond in a winter coat, mittens poking out of her sleeves. She pets the family cat and dog in the garden, and is helped to ride an outsized bicycle by a maid. She chases the cat. Susan pushes a pram with another girl her own age across the lawn. Women and their children gather in the garden where young children pull another child and the Rudd family dog in a toy car and pram. Their parents play with them and sit around the garden. Susan plays with a ball and a doll, seated in a swing bench with two women. She plays chase with a young woman in the shade of a tree.

Susan and Christopher, her younger brother, help their father collect leaves in autumn, raking them and putting them in a sack, held out by Mr. Rudd. Views of a river and trees sporting autumnal colours follow. Susan and Christopher are seen in footage shot a few years later. They are seen in close-up, smiling to the camera, wearing coats and hats. They play ball games with the dogs. The family stands together, one behind the other in height order. In older black and white footage, baby Christopher and a young Susan sit with their mother Mrs. Rudd. The family eat outside at a table by the swing bench. Christopher sits in his highchair.
