This black and white intertitled film provides highlights of J-Class, 12-metre and 8-metre yachts and smaller boats at Cowes week - a sailing regatta held in the Solent off the coast of the Isle of Wight along with the launching of Endeavour a J-class yacht from the Camper and Nicholsons shipyard in Gosport.
"Cowes Week 1933"
This film opens with mixed views of several yachts gathered on the Solent, with profile views of several yachts at sail including J-Class. A Royal Navy ship (HMS Renown?) is stationary on the water in the background as the yachts pass through.
'Intertitle: The Challenge for the America's Cup. Endeavour launched at Gosport. April 16th 1934'. This scene opens with a wide view of the Camper and Nicholsons Ltd shipyard in Gosport, Hampshire. Endeavour is launched from a slipway (without mast and sails) into the sea past the waiting crowds of spectators on the slipway and in small rowing boats on the water. As she is launched, her signal flags are raised by the crew, followed by a brief shot of the Ratsey and Lapthorn Sailmakers loft next to the shipyard.
The film continues with mixed wide shots of yachts at full sail in the Solent, with mixed shots of pleasure craft and J-Class yachts on the water. Aboard the film-maker's yacht, several views of a barge (possibly owned by Mr Nicholson?) passes, along with other pleasure craft. The crew raise the sail of a 12-metre sail yacht (12/ K11) followed by views of the yacht gliding through the water. Mixed views of the crew aboard a boat working the sails and views of other neighbouring craft passing next to the yacht closes the film.
