This film contains various scenes of the Dickins' family life. It shows them at home, with friends and extended family, on school sports days, day trips and holidays within the South East and South West of England. The online film clip includes footage from an 'oral history' interview conducted with John Dickins in February 2008.
The film opens with the title 'April 1946'. The first few shots are of John Dickins and his cousin as 'wolf cubs' in their uniforms, playing with frogs in the garden, and John Dickins playing the piano. The film then cuts to scenes of a picnic at Box Hill in Surrey, which features various family members including grand parents, parents and children. The film also shows a street scene of the Second World War Victory Parade at London Bridge, with a procession of motorbikes, cars and army tanks driving past flag waving crowds. We then return to domestic scenes including children playing with rabbits and swimming at the Orphanage Pool in Beddington Park, Surrey. Images from a family holiday in Broadstairs, Kent show the sea front and cliffs from the beach, as well as shots of the family building sandcastles, riding on a float, roller-skating and shrimping. Family members featured are grandparents, parents and children.
The film shows a scout rally in Beddington Park and a camping trip to Polesden Lacey in Great Bookham, Surrey. There are several shots from a holiday at Sandown on the Isle of Wight, which include a dinosaur skeleton at Blackgang Chine, as well as shots of beach games, cliff-top walks and a donkey ride. The film then cuts to snowy scenes of sledging on Duppas Hill, Croydon and of the family home in Willoughby Avenue. There are several shots of John Dickins canoeing on the Thames River at Chertsey and swimming at Purley Way Pool in Croydon. Sports day at Sherbourne School, Dorset is featured next including shots of running races, the high jump and a tug-of-war.
Grandparents Frank and Charlotte Dickins are shown sitting in their holiday caravan. Ernest and John Dickins take a ride on the train on Hayling Island, Hampshire. Various camping holidays and campsite scenes follow, including trips to Polesden Lacey and Cuckmere Haven, near Eastbourne. We see visitors walking around and climbing on Stonehenge in Wiltshire, as well as a rocky beach and boys swimming in the sea. The sports day at Sherbourne School is featured again for this year, and includes John Dickins' attempts at the high jump as well as footage of the long jump, running and three-legged races. A family holiday in Devon and Cornwall includes coastal views, shots of the family walking on Dartmoor, and exploring ruins and the village of Tintagel.
1949 A title appears with 'Wallington County School for Boys Sports Day, Oct 1st 1949'. There are shots of the high jump, hurdles, running and relay races. Next are brief shots of camping at Polesden Lacey followed by footage of the Whitgift Army Cadet Corps. There are several shots of a family holiday to Exmoor and the Lorna Doone valley, as well as a horse parade. We then cut to John Dickins marching with the Croydon Sea Cadet Corps, T.S. Terra Nova. There are brief shots of repairs being made to a boat, John Dickins in his cricket whites, the Beddington Park Orphanage Pool, and canoeing on the Thames at Chertsey. The film closes with shots of another camping trip to Polesden Lacey, John Dickins and friend making a brick wall, and John Dickins building a canoe.
