This amateur newsreel style film, tours Haywards Heath, exploring everyday life in the town and surrounding areas. Divided into sections, the film explores 'The Environs', 'Recreation', 'Education', 'The Shops', 'Religion' and 'Municipal Matters' with views of parks, gardens, landmarks and buildings with additional material from newspapers.
This amateur intertitled colour newsreel style documentary with commercial opening music, tours the town of Haywards Heath exploring everyday life in the village and surrounding areas. Divided into six sections, the film explores:
'Environs' - explores the village of Balcombe and surrounding countryside, with views of the high street, 'corn merchants' and local parks and gardens.
'Recreation' - explores Beech Hurst Gardens and Miniature railway, with passengers aboard a train, raised on wooden sleepers over brick pillars. Children play in a paddling pool and on playground equipment.
'Education' - A montage of shots of a group of girls at Trevelyan School, performing a dance routine to an audience within the school grounds and views of the exterior of the school building. A Lolly pop man aids children across the road. Mixed shots of the playground at St Wilfrid's Infants School with kitchens. Exterior shots of Haywards Heath Cadet training barracks and St Peter's Roman Catholic School being constructed.
'The Shops' - A montage of shots of the high street including 'Mid Sussex Water Company'; 'Barclay's Bank'; 'J.W.Upton and Sons ', 'The Broadway' and 'Woolworths' on the high street; plus panorama views of other shops and Independent stores and services on South Road. Buses, cars and vehicles pass the camera showing everyday life.
'Religion' - A montage of places of Worship with intertitles: St Wilfrid's Parish Church, The Church of the Presentation, The Church of St Edmund, St Paul's Catholic Church, Haywards Heath Congregational Church, Haywards Heath Hospital Church, Parish Church of St Richard, Perrymount Road Methodist Church, Jireh Baptist Chapel, Kent's Road Meeting Room; all with interior and exterior views.
'Municipal Affairs'. Montage of shots of public service buildings including the library, Cuckfield District Council cemetery, water treatment plant, the former Oaklands District Council building; and shots of road and street works being undertaken, with shots of coins illustrating the cost of those provisions taken from the local rates paid as by residents.
