Summary

This edited colour and black and white film shows a family holiday aboard a cruise ship on route to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. The couple arrive at Las Palmas and capture panoramic views of the people, and landscape around their hotel.

Description

Black and white shots of a ship in harbour open the film, followed by views of freight being lifted on to deck. Boats pass the camera carrying cargo. Following a cut to black, the film opens on Stella and another woman standing on the deck of a large ship or cruise liner, the camera pans about showing the deck, facilities and views out to sea. Brief view of land in the distance and a gull flying low overhead.

In colour, shots of the deck and sea are viewed as the boat comes into land. The next sequence shows rural views of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. A hotel cafe sprawls out onto the pavement ('Hotel Faroque'?) where a waiter serves drinks to guests. Stella stands on the beach, as the camera captures panoramic views of the sea and shoreline. On a hillside a group tour a small village (?) capturing views of local children standing together. Panoramic views of the countryside from on top of the hill close the scene.

In black and white (faded, low contrast), the camera captures further views of the landscape in a valley where rural farm land is dotted with religious buildings, towns and villages. The camera captures rural life, with a man riding a donkey with cargo and two women washing clothing in a water trough on a hillside. The shot then cuts to a map of the island highlighting surrounding larger towns and villages. A group of older men and women gather on a terrace as the camera wildly pans about filming the landscape (shaky shots).

In colour, the camera captures views of the interior of the hotel lobby and restaurant. A woman sits in a swing seat next to a table. The shot then cuts to a dock where several large trucks are loading and unloading cargo onto a ship filled with large oil drums (?). Mixed views of a large sprawling town or city are seen from the dockside, as the camera moves about. The family are waiting to board their ship for their trip back to the UK with their car.
