Summary

An amateur film-maker records the naming ceremony of Shoreham-by-Sea's new lifeboat RNLB Dorothy and Philip Constant on 18th July 1963.

Description

The film opens with the words of The Navy Hymn, 'Eternal Father, Strong to Save' edited over images of the sea. On an overcast July 1963 day crowds wait on the harbourside for the arrival of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. The Princess, who is President of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, arrives by car. Along with the other VIPs, the Princess attends the religious ceremony before officially naming Shoreham-by-Sea's new lifeboat RNLB Dorothy and Philip Constant. The lifeboat is then launched down the slipway, travelling out to sea accompanied by a Coastguard helicopter.
