Summary

Description

The film opens with the title: "Arundel" and an image of the River Arun with Arundel Castle in the background.

Shots of the castle entrance gate follow and people line up ready to greet the 16th Duke and Duchess of Norfolk (the Duchess wears a blue dress). The Duke and Duchess leave the Norfolk Centre after an opening ceremony and are driven off in a waiting car; a large crowd is assembled to watch.

Shot of the River Arundel The West Sussex Regiment march through the town and the Mayor and Mayoress stand on a podium; large crowds are gathered to watch the parade.

Shot of stained glass window with title: "Visit of Papal Nuncio". Clergy are gathered outside the cathedral with the Papal Nuncio before another shot of the same stained glass window.

Sign: "Cathedral of Our Lady & St Philip" precedes exterior shots of the cathedral. A civic and clerical procession enters the cathedral.

Shot of Arundel Castle. Riders are gathered at a gymkhana and children take part in various games. Scenes of show jumping follow before the film cuts to the Arundel Gardens Association annual August bank holiday Flower Show; flowers are on display.

A title reads: "End of an era". A flag flies with the war memorial in the background. Notice reads: "1085 and all that". Procession of civic leaders to mark the end of Borough status for the town. The Scout band is assembled as the Mayor makes a speech and a plaque is unveiled on the town square. Shots of the new bridge crossing the river, forming part of the new A27 bypass precedes views of the town from the river. A young girl knocks on the door of "Town Gate" at the top of the High Street; a bugler plays from the battlements above the gate. A carnival procession emerges through the gate, including a vintage fire engine "Arundel Castle", vintage cars, floats and people dressed in various costumes.
