Summary

A film from the Ellis family collection. Mr Phil Ellis captures scenes from the Festival of Britain, Brands Hatch, Epsom Racecourse, Chessington Zoo and views from the River Medway in Kent. Family members pose for the camera and are seen enjoying a variety of leisure time activities.

Description

A cartoon dog appears at the beginning of the film, followed by scenes from the Festival of Britain, 1951 at the South Bank, London. There are shots of 'The Dome of Discovery' and 'The Skylon', as well as St Paul's Cathedral viewed across the River Thames from the South Bank. The Ellis family are then seen playing a ball game on Brighton beach, before sitting down to eat a picnic. There are shots of Brighton sea front, including close-up shots of family members riding on swing-boats. A woman poses for the camera outside a house, and is joined by other family members; a large group of women sit in a garden knitting. Young people swim and dive in an outdoor swimming pool. At a motorcycle race at Brands Hatch there is a close-up shot of a man and woman talking to camera, followed by a family picnic. Views of the grandstand and course at Epsom Racecourse are seen, followed by shots of animals and a miniature railway at Chessington Zoo. Some women play an informal cricket match on a country lane at Bramber. People then gather on the lawns of a country house, following which there are shots of landscaped gardens and an affectionate young couple kissing and shaking hands. Shots of Allington Castle (?) follow, filmed from a boat on the River Medway. A young woman holds up a life buoy which reads "Peter Ann, Yalding". More river scenes follow and a church and stained glass windows, before the film ends with a vintage car rally.
