This collection dating from the mid to late 1930s features the family of Francis Williams in and around their Saltdean home. Williams had a keen interest in motorcar and motorcycle racing alongside running his photography businesses in Rottingdean and Saltdean. The films show family activities in Rottingdean, Saltdean and Peacehaven as well as events such as King George V's Silver Jubilee in Brighton, King George VI’s Coronation events on the South Coast and life on the home front during the Second World War.

[Cars and Family Scenes]
This film contains dark scenes of competitors in the motorcar and motorcycle speed trials at Gatwick; family scenes filmed by Mr Williams in Rottingdean, showing a crowd gathered outside the film-maker's shop and on the beach with the children; plus a brief shot of the front of the town hall, and a young woman posing for the camera.
[Grandad and Children]
This film by Francis Williams contains footage of a family gathering in Peacehaven. Mr Williams uses titles to introduce the three generations of the family present. We also see Mr Williams' father, Alfred Canning Williams, tending bees in his garden.
[King George V Silver Jubilee]

Made by amateur film-maker F. J. Williams, this film provides a record of local celebrations for King George V's Silver Jubilee in Brighton, Peacehaven and Rottingdean on May 6, 1935. The film contains footage of street decorations hung in Brighton, crowds celebrating with fancy dress and dance displays in Peacehaven. At Rottingdean a large wooden beacon is built to mark the occasion, a practice that was repeated across the British Empire on this date.
Mr Williams records family scenes including his son's first steps in a family garden in Peacehaven, Christmas Day activities in 1935, and a family picnic on the beach at Rottingdean. The film closes with a brief shot of the young boy dressed as Cupid for the Rottingdean fair.
This film contains footage of Shoreham Air Show in the late 1930s, with various aircraft and parachute teams flying over the airfield performing routines for the air display. Continued from TID: 8957.

[Aeroplanes at Shoreham]
This film contains footage of Shoreham Air Show in the late 1930s. Various propellor driven aircraft stand stationary on the airfield as well as taking off to perform in the air display. Later shots show spectators on the ground walking amongst the aircraft. Continued on TID:8598 with scenes of the air display.
[Rottingdean Windmill Reconstruction]
This intertitled amateur newsreel style film by FJ Williams, documents a series of local events in the seaside town of Rottingdean. The film shows stormy weather and a beached whale, the opening of the new Public Hall by the Mayor and Mayoress and the restoration of Rottingdean Windmill by several tradesman.

This film by amateur film-maker Francis Williams records celebrations marking the coronation of King George VI. The first section contains street scenes of Rottingdean during Coronation week. The second section shows some of the ships that took part in the Coronation Naval Fleet Review at Portsmouth. These include the German battleship 'Graf Spee' and the Royal Yacht 'HMY Victoria and Albert III'.

Made during the Second World War, this amateur film shows members of the Williams family using a ladder to climb onto the roof of their house in Saltdean. The children are seen playing on the roof with their dog. Shots also show soldiers parading on the A259 followed by several army tanks and military vehicles in Rottingdean.
