This collection of amateur films by Mrs Kathleen Arrowsmith offers a vivid portrait of rural life on a working farm in
Berkshire from the mid 1930s to early 1940s. Many of the films feature traditional hand and mechanised steam farming techniques to harvest grain and vegetable produce. The later films in the collection feature views of larger vehicles of the period, as well as views of rearing livestock and a variety of breeds of working strong horses on the family farm.

This black and white film provides highlights of livestock and farm life on the Arrowsmith family farm in Berkshire. Mixed shots follow the construction of hayricks; farm workers building thatch topped straw stacks; Suffolk Punch horses working a field; and farmers dipping sheep in a dipping bath.

This black and white film provides highlights of sheep farming, the family showing their Suffolk Punch strong horses at a South Berkshire rural show and scenes of a hunting party led by a huntmaster, with his large pack of hounds.

[Hay Making; Royal Show]
Two black and white films, the first of agricultural labourers collecting hay. The second film provides highlights of part of a heavy horse show class from the 1937 98th Royal Agricultural Show at Wrottesley Park, Wolverhampton.
[Horses; Mechanised Farming]
These short colour scenes feature the Arrowsmith family loading their horses into a horse box, men working on the farm, felling trees and working the land using a caterpillar tractor to prepare the land. The final scene is of several men manually harvesting sugarbeet or turnips and loading the produce on to horse drawn carts.
[Toddler at the Farm]
This colour film shows a young toddler on the family farm playing with the farm cats, chasing the pigeons and playing on the steps outside the farm house.
[Sheep and Lambs]
This Dufaycolor film opens with scenes of sheep (ewes and lambs) in a paddock, eating from a trough and sitting on the grass; followed by scenes of other sheep in an open field (Green cast on some shots).
[Lamb Tailing; Children; Fordson Tractor]
This film opens with scenes of animal husbandry, followed by mixed family scenes and farming. An orange Fordson Standard N tractor is used on the farm.
[Traction engine with Cultivator; Lambs; Foals]
This colour film features several men working the land on a farm, clearing it before cultivating it with machinery. Several flywheel traction engines are used to tow a cultivator or tiller to turn the soil. The second film features family scenes ending with shots of sheep with their lambs and horses with foals.
[Horse Transport; Family; Farming; Cows]
This film opens with a horse being loaded onto a trailer next to a railway, followed by shots of a Fordson Standard N tractor being used to work a grain harvest and domestic scenes.
[Sow and Piglets; Vegetable Crop Harvest]
This short film opens with a sow and her piglets in a pen followed by field workers harvesting a vegetable crop (sugarbeet or turnip) by hand. Horse and carts are used to move the vegetables around the fields.
[Land Clearance on the Farm]
This short colour film shows a man driving a caterpillar tractor pulling down trees to clear a field in preparation for it to be farmed. The men use dry straw as kindling to start fires under the felled trees.
